Summer of 1993I was commissioned by the managers of the Priuli Agli Scalzi modern art gallery, then based in downtown Venice, to take care of a series of musical and multimedia events to be held inside the prestigious and historic cloister of Sant'Apollonia located just behind the Ponte Dei Sospiri near Piazza San Marco.Actually, the adjoining rooms of the same cloister were already hosting "Shin-On" an important personal exhibition of the Japanese painter Shuhei Matsuyama to whom I had provided the soundtrack of the premises with music specially composed by me.more info here : alessandropizzin.bandcamp.com/album/shin-onSo the cloister was one of the most artistically active places for the second half of the summer in 1993, arousing considerable interest from the public and professionals although the already rich Venetian cultural events scene."Orizzonti Sensibili" (Sensitive Horizons) was the title of the program that from 3 to 28 September 1993 hosted 8 concerts/performances (which later became 7 due to a cancellation of the very last hour) ranging from video art to multimedia and mixed-media performance. It was an extremely demanding and tiring organizational experience that probably would have deserved to continue over the years, using the 1993 edition as a solid basis for further new adventures, but without the necessary support and without the "useful" knowledge any project, even the most valid and visionary, it is destined to be forgotten by the decision makers of local cultural policy. Therefore the whole project, despite its undoubted public success, was a one-shot in the lagoon cultural scene and very few documents (audio and video) remained as evidence of what happened there.I remember having chosen to propose my multi-media performance (multi-channel audio broadcasting) on Friday 10 September.Initially I had thought of proposing a live performance interpolated to audio-broadcasting and multi-channel spatialization, but a series of technical problems (first of all the extraordinary evening humidity inside the cloister itself) then suggested to perform the spatialization of the sound installation only, thus allowing me to place the audience precisely in the center of the selected listening area, particularly sensitive to the perception of the 4 audio monitors expertly distributed within the original cloister floor and the other 4 monitors positioned on the windows of the noble floor of the building and carefully directed towards some carefully designed "sound reflection zones"."Apollonia '93" was (and still is) a long suite of almost thirty minutes characterized by the overlapping of sounds and frequencies that also played on the opportunities "of acoustic reflections" offered by the special architecture of the extraordinary hosting location. The evening took place on a particularly humid evening, but i would say "typically Venetian" for those who know the environmental characteristics of one of the most extraordinary places on the planet bordering its characteristic autumn. The event was videotaped, but unfortunately the abovementioned "humidity conditions" of the evening compromised part of the video recordings (almost all the video tapes). In my recent research in my personal archive I found that the masters of that recording had been preserved despite the numerous forced movements that the archive itself has undergone over the years.I therefore proceeded to rework the multichannel tracks, restoring the very few defects caused by the passing of time.It would probably have been desirable to make a version in 5.1 to exploit the original spatialization project, but I soon realized that this hypothesis would have been beyond my current possibilities, so here it is - in glorious stereo - finally available this further fragment of my personal creative path, which I suggest listening strictly in the dark (or with very little light) because this was the condition of the public on that evening of September 1993 (I suggest, however, to avoid listening in a particularly humid place because, although it could give you the sensation to relive that sensory condition of the evening Venetian cloister, it could also give you some quite annoying rheumatic side effects).
