Story
Honora Parsons, a 17 year-old girl born and raised on Inishmore, the largest of the 3 Aran Islands, has never known a life beyond her home in Killeany. She is bound by an unspoken life commitment to helping her little brother, Walter, and father, Eddie, preserve their family's land through their only industry, kelp making. However, on her 18th birthday, Nora's way of life is challenged when she receives a letter from her sister, Bridie, offering her sponsorship to immigrate to America. Nora is now faced with a choice: to stay in the home that she knows, or leave for an unknown life in America. Her parents reluctantly summon the parish priest, Father Finnerty to convince Nora to accept her sister's offer. And to the regret and ruin of her family, especially Walter, Nora leaves and never returns - Until 60 years later, joined by her American son and grandson, Nora returns to Aran only to find a broken and abandoned home. And as she looks on, she realizes what it was she lost as a result...
