Story
Now 87 years old, John M. Perkins was born into Mississippi poverty, the son of a sharecropper and into a family of bootleggers and gamblers. He fled to California when he was 17 after his older brother was murdered, having been shot twice by a white town marshal. Although John Perkins vowed never to return, in 1960 faith found him and he returned to his boyhood home in Mississippi, to a state that was - and some say still is - deeply segregated. His outspoken involvement and leadership in the American civil rights movement led to his repeated harassment, imprisonment, and extended beatings by white police officers. Yet, he chose to forgive and to seek equality through love, understanding and pain and continues to fight for justice today, believing that, "True justice is wrapped up in love." In an age where we see continued oppression and increasing racial division and disunity across America and beyond, this film draws a thread between our past and our present.
