Story
An iconic painting has come to life through the power of dance: "The Maestro" was premiered on December 17, 2018 by Afropunk. Expertly interpreted, directed, choreographed and performed by Juel D. Lane, this dance-on-film was filmed by cinematographer, James R. Wiley, and features the musical composition of Munir Zakee. Through this video production, the cast and crew pay tribute to painter, Ernie Barnes (1938-2009), the first American professional athlete (football) to become a noted painter. While painting elongated figures, Barnes frequently featured closed eyes to symbolize how we are often blind to one another's humanity. In "The Maestro," the conductor directs the sounds which spill out of an old-time radio, in a nod to his own hopes and dreams.
