Story
The Common Core State Standards Initiative was a nationwide push to reform schools in all US states under a single national set of standards. But unlike normal reforms, these standards slid under the radar until nearly every state had adopted them. The standards were first adopted in 2009 and by 2013, 60% of Americans still said they did not know what the "Common Core" was. Building the Machine is the first and only investigative documentary into who was behind these standards, how the standards affect students, and most importantly, why nobody knew about them until now.
