Story
In 1939, idealistic Manchester blue collar pacifist Douglas Bennett retrieves from police jail his spirited son Tom, daughter Lois and her upper class fiance, brilliant Harry Chase, who becomes a translator Polish and German and the British embassy in Warshaw. As UK PM Chamberlain ignores warnings against Hitler's aggression from correspondents like American broadcaster Nancy Campbell, she witnesses at the Polish-German border and barely escapes arrest during the German invasion of Poland. In Danzig, Polish troops naively try to make a stand, but are slaughtered except the commander's son and his mentor, who even manage bribe a German to look away a moment. Harry Chase realizes he can only save his local lover Kasia Tomaszeski from arrest by marriage, but when their train leaves she tricks him to take along her kid brother Jan instead, puzzling his mother.
