Story
Will, Henry and Beanpole start from Calais to find the White Mountains in the South. Beanpole looks at the route Ozymandias described and says it is loaded with Tripods. He suggests a more circuitous route. As they walk, Beanpole explains that his parents gave him to the innkeeper for raising. Feeding prisoners was part of his duties. What he really wants is to continue being able to invent things. He tells of experiments with small hot air balloons, jumping springs for his shoes, and the power of steam from a kettle. He knows that capping would end his curiosity and imagination. Each year he has feigned illness that kept him from the capping ceremonies. The trio stop for a rest at the farm of his uncle and aunt where he spent summers. Beanpole suggests they alter their route to go east because of the chemin de fer, a railroad.
