Story
The 'theological' debate about church property resumes after apologies from both parties, but is soon interrupted y inquisitor Bernardo Gui to investigate the murder of another monk. He immediately arrests, tortures and starts trialing Remigio da Varagine, who was found next to the corpse and is suspected of having switched form the Franciscans to the Benedictines to escape an earlier heresy trial. William and Adso search in vain the murder site for a Greek book Remigio whispers about, realizing a too late is was snatched away being bound with other manuscripts. Young monk Benno had opportunity for both crimes, no known motive. Adso arrives just in time to rescue his peasant beloved from the clutches of madly enamored Salvatore, who planned to magically make her fall for him as the simpleton's captive in the water mill, only to be trusted in the outflow, actually sparing him arrest by Gui's papal soldiers, who are shot at by vindictive Anna, desperate now her childhood savior is on ...
