Story
At age eighteen, Maynard has finally come to the conclusion that most others have known all his life: that he is directionless. He wants to change his drifting ways, but doesn't know how. Dobie isn't much help advising him either. So they decide to ask their exasperated teacher, Mr. Milfloss, for advice. What Mr. Milfloss tells them is that the reason Maynard is able to drift is because no one is dependent on him, that sense of responsibility to another human being which would give him purpose, and that a girlfriend is such a person. This advice scares Maynard as girls in general scare Maynard. But when Dobie approaches a female who he has never seen before and who he believes is the latest such to steal his heart, Maynard too has found that girl for who he is looking. That same girl, Francoise Desjardins, is visiting from Paris and doesn't speak English, and Dobie doesn't speak French.
