Story
While returning to Dodge City on the stage Earp meets a very quiet and private man who says he is going west but gives no reason. When the stage causes a wagon to overturn and injure Lem and Martha Evans, the man Dr. Carl McDowell treats them. At Dodge City Dr. McCarty approves of his work. He and Earp suggest McDowell open a practice in Dodge City as people are dying due to a lack of care. Earp especially and McCarty find McDowell curious and unwilling to answer certain questions. Earp learns he had no practice in Cincinnati as claimed and McCarty catches him lying about his medical school. Although there are plenty of unlicensed doctors in the west, Earp is concerned Dr. McDowell will kill someone so he confronts Dr. McDowell. McCarty wants him to stay but thinks he can pass the state exam for a license. Smallpox has hit Wichita which worries Dr. McCarty.
