Story
In France, Alec, Catherine, Henry and the Black are looking for directions to a farm when a magnificent jumper named Alto comes up. The rider informs them that he was supposed to meet them but was late, and he guides them to the farm, practicing his jumping course along the way. His horse refuses at a very tall jump called "The Judge," but he guides them to the farm. After everybody is settled in, Henry drives off to Paris, promising Alec that he'll be back in a week. Alec is working with the rider, who turns out to be the owner's son, setting up jumps when his horse comes up limping. After being looked at by the vet, it is determined that he won't be able to compete in a race next week, and that they were counting on the winnings to keep the farm going. Alec thinks about this and decides that the Black will compete in the race, although everybody warns him that he is not trained for steeplechase.
