Story
Jim Hardie is on a stage to Placer City to investigate a robbery and the murder of a Wells Fargo agent during the robbery. One of the passengers, Frank Woodson, seems to recognize Hardie but Jim does not know him. Two men stop the stage even though the driver says they are caring no money on this leg of the route. The men force the passengers to get out of the stage saying it is not a holdup but they want one man worth a lot of greenbacks. After the first of the three passengers dismounts, Woodson tells Hardie he is the one they are after. After Woodson and then Hardie dismount, the men, bounty hunters, make it clear Woodson won't make it back alive. Hardie, believing the outlaw deserves a trial, tosses Woodson his gun and ducks. Woodson kills the two men and leaves on one of their horses. Upon reaching Placer City Hardie is told by Sheriff Lund the only clue is a wounded Bud Sawyer.
