Story
The famous advice columnist Francesca Kirby is kidnapped and pushed into a car by a man dressed in a wetsuit. After a short ride she grabs the steering wheel and turns the car off the road. The man runs away. Next day Francesca calls for chief detective Ironside, who promises to surveil her discreetly. Some days later someone tries to poison her with strychnine without success. Ironside and his team investigate all persons around her, without finding any clues. Several persons, like her husband Mitch Kirby and her sister Doris Keller, hate her, but they are all dependent on her income, so there is no reason for them to kill her. Ironside decides to send police officer Eve Whitfield to Francesca, pretending to be her new secretary, while the ordinary one is at leave. Working undercover gives Eve the opportunity to observe what's going on in Francesca's house. She happens to see Francesca's manager, Vic Durant, leaving the code of the safe in a drawer.
