Story
The old and new orders clash in a small village in China in 1957. Moon Scent returns to her husband Gold Root, and daughter Beckon, bringing money saved from working as a domestic for three years in Shanghai. Gold Root feels uncomfortable living on his wife's earnings. When he and his wife disagree about lending money to his sister Gold Flower and her ailing husband Plenty Own, an argument ensues. Complicating these personal problems, the army, represented by Comrade Wong, demands donations of food from the peasants. Gold Root rebels at the collection site, demands that the army share its stored rice with the peasants, and is shot. Moon Scent wonders aloud about the ideological gap that had arisen between her and her husband.
