Story
Lead Segment/Icy River Rescue: Mary Ellen Garza was about to leave to pick up her sons from school on that frigid December day in Moorhead, Minnesota, when the door bell rang. A friend of her 11-year-old son, Alvaro, was hysterical. Mary's son had just fallen through the ice on the Red River, about 75 ft. from shore. Original news footage was used showing the dramatic rescue, with firefighters using 12-foot pike poles to pull the boy from the 32-degree water. Submerged for 45 minutes, Alvaro had only a one percent chance for survival. But through the heroic efforts of paramedics, doctors, and nurses, Alvaro fully recovered. This episode was, technically, the second pilot. Both pilots aired during the spring of 1989.
