Story
Ross is shocked to find out - helped by Caroline's bravely contacted society connections - that George's partner Ralph Hanson is backed by his half-brother, judge and prison governor Merceron, who is part of minister William Wickham's informer deal with the London underworld. Back in Cornwall, Ross is captured by the smugglers, and, in league with them, his French Napoleonic nemesis colonel Laurent, who is persuaded to recruit Ross as disgruntled traitor. Geoffrey Charles learns that his fiancee Cecily is kept locked in, arranges for her escape, and begs Ross to help them escape to America on the ship that is returning Kit to Honduras. Caroline blackmails George over his psychotic episode to turn on Merceron and Hanson, whom she has already discredited, but the fiends twist that plot. Drake and Morwenna reveal they are expecting a new arrival.
