Story
Because he has to chop and bring in wood for it all the time, Uncle Joe tries to convince Kate to buy a new electric stove to replace her old wood burning one in the kitchen by telling her that her cooking is suffering because of the antiquated equipment. She doesn't buy Uncle Joe's argument, in addition to the fact that she can't afford a new stove. Uncle Joe takes two further subversive actions to get to his end goal. First, he writes to snobbish and opinionated New York food critic Lucius J. Penrose, who does agree to come to the Shady Rest solely to eat Kate's food, his stamp of approval which would mean that she could hang the "Lucius J. Penrose approved" plaque in the hotel dining room. And second, he does whatever he can to make Kate think the wood fire stove is broken, while in the process buy a new electric one which will be in the ready just as the old one "breaks down".
