Story
Between December 2003 and February 2004 more than 18 patients at Horton General Hospital in Oxfordshire suffered respiratory arrest or respiratory depression while under the care of Accident & Emergency ward nurse Benjamin Geen. While 16 of the patients recovered soon after, two men died and Geen was arrested on 9th February 2004. Upon his arrest an empty syringe was found in his pocket, tests revealed traces of a muscle relaxant in the syringe. An internal hospital investigation identified 27 cases that were scrutinised but 9 were later discounted and Geen was acquitted in one case which was found to have been caused by natural causes. Ben Geen stood trial at Oxford Crown Court where it was alleged that he had deliberately and repeatedly administered potentially lethal doses of drugs to cause patients to stop breathing because he got a thrill out of then resuscitating them.
