Story

A little girl suffers a head injury that leaves her slightly brain-damaged. She still is able to walk, talk, and care for herself, but her mother's insistence that her daughter is and must be "normal" disrupts her marriage and the lives of her other children. The girl's father, a concert pianist, manages to persuade his wife to institutionalize the child if a doctor confirms that she is not and never will be "normal." The story provides an object lesson in what was considered the correct way to deal with mental deficiencies at the midpoint of the twentieth century.
