Story
The last training week starts with church service, but just washing up earns slacker John 'Kyp' Kyprianou twenty 'bastards' (a push-up and jumping Jack-combination) and the day of rest loses many hours by obligatory hymn singing and a beastly room inspection when all beds are turned over in 'solidarity'. Next the tug of war (rope-pulling between the sections) and fatigues (boring chores like sweeping leaves). Mail is a boost for most, grievous for Kyp as his parents write he hard truth. Next a day and night exercise with real guns with blanks and field shovels to dig in after a march and camp till the objective: a dawn assault on a bridge, after Chris Harkin is caught firing a shot -strictly forbidden, at close distance even blanks are very dangerous- and lying about it; the attack is lots of boyish fun, even explosives, actually quite promising for once.
