Story
SERVICE explores craft and the military, from the origins of the Army Arts and Crafts program and the G.I. Bill to contemporary soldiers and veterans. Featuring EHREN TOOL, third-generation soldier and Marine veteran of the Gulf War, says that his work is not anti-war. By making clay cups by hand, his purpose is to draw attention to war and its consequences. He has given away over 14,000 cups since 2001. JUDAS RECENDEZ, Army Sergeant, veteran of the Iraqi War, lost both legs in an IED explosion. During his rehabilitation, he refined his ceramic practice at the Army Arts and Crafts Center, obtaining his BA in Fine Arts at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. PETER VOULKOS, possibly America's greatest ceramic artist, served in WWII and earned his art degree through the G.I. Bill, as did many of his contemporaries, such as jeweler Ramona Solberg and woodworker Arthur Espenet Carpenter.
