Story
With Hale gone for supplies, Bill Hawks is in charge of the wagon train. Barnaby along with a couple of other boys get carried away with their pranks when they remove the wheel nut on Marcey Jones' wagon who is a drunk. Bill forces Barnaby to fix the wagon by himself but being too weak and young Barnaby breaks his leg when the wagon falls on it. Bill had threatened to punish Barnaby with a whipping as the boy's pranks are out of line and he hasn't changed his mind. Feeling humiliated and angry, Barnaby runs away and breaks his leg---again, the second time very seriously with a compound fracture. Bill feels responsible and starts turning to drinking, and hence endangering the train partly by leading the wagon train into an attack by Apaches. At the same time, cynical drunk, Marcey Jones, begins to change in the opposite direction and stops drinking and starts taking more responsibility along with Molly Garland who knows what Barnaby could be facing when they think his leg needs ...
