Story
The story is based on a naval officer, who is investigating a leak of military secrets from a naval base in Devon, England. The investigating officer finds the leak to emanate from a respected officer, with a distinguished record in WW2. Set in the early 1960's it is a complex tale, which follows a cat and mouse chase of the through London, and, later, the actions of the spying officer's friend, who is asked to assist him. There's a healthy dose of "love interest" in the shape of the delightfully described Jane Day, who later turns out to be on the side of the of those chasing the spy.
The spy's actions are explained by his recollections of the deaths of soldiers during WW2, which lead him to become convinced that world peace was only obtainable by following the Communist cause. Friendships are tested to the limits and eventually the spy's friend, whose trust and respect for his former commanding officer, who had saved his life during the war, has to face the reality that his former ...
